IND v AUS : Spencer Johnson Debuts In Second ODI, Very New Player

Can He Make It to the IPL?

In the second ODI match between India and Australia at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in
Indore, Australia introduced a new player, Spencer Johnson. He’s a left-arm fast bowler,
and if you haven’t heard of him before, you’re not alone.

A Fast Bowler with Speed

Spencer Johnson is 27 years old and has made quite an impression in cricket leagues
like the Big Bash League and The Hundred. He’s known for consistently bowling at
speeds around 150 kilometers per hour. Back in 2017, he made his List-A debut for
South Australia in a match against Victoria.

Overcoming Injury

Unfortunately, Spencer had to take a break from cricket for three years due to a stress
fracture in his left leg. It was a severe injury, and he couldn’t even run for about a year.

A Sensational Start

Spencer’s T20I debut came during Australia’s series against South Africa this year,
where he impressed with two wickets in multiple matches. He made headlines with his
fantastic bowling in his debut match in The Hundred, taking three wickets for just one
run in 20 balls.

The ODI Debut

In his ODI debut against India, Spencer Johnson, Australia’s 243rd ODI player, had a
chance to shine, but he couldn’t make a big impact on the Indian pitch. However,
Australia has high hopes for this young bowler.

Eyes on the IPL

Spencer was picked by the Los Angeles Knight Riders for the Major League Cricket
(MLC 2023). He performed well with two wickets in three matches. Considering his
impressive performances in different leagues, it wouldn’t be surprising if an Indian
Premier League (IPL) team decides to sign him in the upcoming auction.

Impressive T20 Record

In T20 cricket, Spencer Johnson has taken 16 wickets in 18 matches at an economy
rate of 7.69. It’s worth noting that he has limited experience in List-A and first-class
cricket, with six and four games respectively, but he has taken 6 and 20 wickets in those
formats, showing promise for the future.
